I think that pins only get pushed down for certain laces (I could be
wrong), but it seems that the lace I've seen made (and made myself) pins
get pushed down in honiton, and tape, and probably the other sectional
laces like duchess, etc (I haven't made duchesse or Milanese so can't
speak with any authority on them).

Continuous laces like torchon, beds, point ground, etc the pens tend not
to be pushed dow (exceptions do occur, like at the start of a piece you
might join up like circles, squares, etc, and depending on how they're
worked, you might push the pins down as you neer the end of the piece,
so that you can work the last few rows/stitches).

Also these laces, in some cases had striver pins places - a pin with a
distinctive head might be placed at the start of work, so that the
worker could se how much the made in a day or hour or whatever. I
sometimes do it to see how long it takes to complete a repeat.

Hope this helps some.

Cheers,
Helen, Aussie living in breezy Denver.
