Dear Lacemakers, there is an article about the history of lacemakers in the U.K. magazine, "Family History Monthly", (the April issue).
As I only bought it this afternoon, I haven't had time to read it through, but a quick skim shows four pages of respectable writing, some good photographs and a list of sources. There are also some interesting weblinks and a useful piece on where to find documents about individual lacemakers. I didn't know that single women would list themselves on censuses by their occupations, but married women were wives and mothers first - and their 'hobbies' were of no interest to the censustaker. (Even today, I suppose, market researchers will only accept the occupation of "the head of the household" - that is, the husband.)
