The machine-made netting that Filet Lace by the Sea (Marie-Jo Quinalt)
sells is knotted. The knot used in both is a simple knot and as such
appears the same in both the hand-knotted and machine-made netting that
I've seen. I don't think you will be able to know if the net was hand or
machine made in an old piece.
Karen,
Thank you for providing this information. I had also been told that if it had
the knot in the corner it was handmade. But the quantity of it around seemed
incredible for such a laborious process. It just didn't seem to make sense
that such a popular and relatively simple 19th century handi-craft practiced by
society ladies and hardworking peasants alike would require such a laborious
process before the decoration could even begin.
