Weronika Needle lace is probably slower than bobbin lace, by a considerable margin. When people make fun of you, compare what you do to wood carving. I do believe that is an apt comparison. Woodcarving is to carpentry what bobbin lace is to needlework.
If you preshrink the T shirt and preshrink the lace, it should be OK to attach the lace and machine wash it. Turning it inside out would probably be useful in reducing danger to the lace.
