In reply to Lorelei's very astute observations about tape laces, I have also noted the very early ten stick curlicues in the Milanese-Flemish laces. The connection I made was with the Punto Fiandra from Italy, which works a three pair braid with knotted picots. The Italians wouldn't have pulled the term Fiandra out of thin air. I believe the reference is to the ten stick designs.
