My personal opinion is that book reviews in magazines are fine, but they only give the opinion of one person from their own perspective and therefore they are very limited.
Reference books like the Book of Bobbin Lace Stitches, Brenda's thread book and the Cook book have a specific purpose, and will be, in some ways, easier to give a review that will guide most lacemakers as to whether it's useful or not. We don't all want the same things from the majority of books. Some will want a book full of prickings and need little guidance in making, others will want full explanations and technical diagrams. Some will want a little, some will want a lot of historial and back ground information about different laces, other aren't interested in this at all. Some just want prickings they can make as printed, others will want patterns they can adapt. Some will see the lack of an English translation as a drawback, others won't. And so on. So, I'm all for book reviews in magazines, newsletters, etc, but asking Arachne is probably more useful if you want to know something specific about a book and whether it's suitable for you.
