Dear Sharon and other spiders

the only time I had the opportunity to take a pattern from an old vellum pricking (which didn't belong to me, alas) I got good results from an ordinary photocopier. I put a sheet of black paper behind the pricking to help the holes stand out, and had to fiddle with the dark/light controls quite a bit, but ended up with a useable copy. I then pricked it onto plain paper, trued it up, and made a new pricking on card as usual. I was very pleased with the resulting lace - it was a sort of neck-tie-cum-jabot in bedfordshire lace.

PS I did do some brass rubbing, long ago in the dim and distant past, for which we used something known as 'cobblers heel ball'. It was like a very black, very fat wax crayon. You could also get it in colours, even metallics, which were very effective for church brasses. No idea if its still available...
