Dear Arachnes, After a long discussion with Devon today, I've decided to tell you about MagnaPin Jewelry Fasteners, which might meet a need lace wearers have. Two sets are $26.50 + p/h.
These are for jewelry, and mean you would not have to pin through lace. Magnetized round disks, with a side through which you can feed a brooch pin. Once one magnet is attached to your brooch pin, you put the second magnet under the fabric of your garment where you want it, then the magnet attached to your brooch goes on the top of your garment (and lace). I use one set of these on a lovely old brooch that has little space for fabric to be caught by it. In fact, the pin bar is so short that the garment would pucker. Works like a charm. Can be worn on fabrics that a pin would damage - fine weaves, leather, UltraSuede, wool coats. Can also be used on a brooch that converts to a pendant. If you use a long chain for the pendant, you can attach the magnets and it will prevent the pendant from swinging away from your body and possibly hitting something that will damage the pendant. Two sets come per package, so if you have a very long pin on the back of a brooch you can put two magnets on it to balance the load. It is nice for brooch pins that may have large shafts (diameter) or have a dull point, both of which put more strain on fabric or tear it. I'm thinking it would be nice for attaching a family heirloom to a bridal gown, without harming the gown. MagnaPins can be slid off and used on other brooches. I saw women at an IOLI Convention banquet wearing large Point d' Gaze collars held in place with cameo brooches. Using MagnaPins would have been one solution to not pinning into the lace.
