Over the years I have noted that lacemakers are often people who are involved in other crafts which makes sense to me. Some are involved in cake decorating which is similar in the sense that you can make something very pretty using tools (lots of tools) and techniques that require skill. Some are involved in stamp collecting which involves looking at small things through magnification, again, very understandable. Likewise, many are interested in miniatures and doll houses. However, I have also noticed that a rather surprising number of lacemakers are involved in motorcycle riding. Is there some reason why the same people who like to make lace like motorcycle riding? Does this merely reflect the enormous popularity of motorcycling generally? Is it largely an attempt to humor the hobby of the husband in order to encourage him to humor the lacemaking? Or is there some more basic relationship that I, a non-motorcycle rider, am missing? Devon
Hi Devon, I am answering because I rode behind my husband on his huge Harley touring bike (we called it the Winne-Bike-0). But I didn't like the way he drove. Much too enamored of the throttle. So I bought my own Harley, a gorgeous deep cobalt Sportster. My friends were highly amused. I like lace, Mozart and motorcycles. I LOVE to ride, but don't anymore because of health issues. I couldn't wear a helmet anymore - migraines. For me riding tickles the same place in my psyche as having a golden moment lacemaking when everything just flows, when I'm in the "zone". Riding is complex, full of sensory delight and the trip is more important than the destination (the same way I feel about lacemaking.) It's a form of performance art. Even if I feel slightly ridiculous in leathers (short, round lacemaker's figure, great low center of gravity). Finding steel toed boots in a ladies size was a bit of an experience. But the boots have laces! How's that for lace content? Patty Dowden P.S.
