Sure, it can be and has been done that way. I was looking at a piece of antique lace just a couple days ago that was made exactly that way. When it's turned over, the net is visible on the back of the motifs. I think perhaps this method became more common after the machine made nets were available.


There's probably points of advantage in each of the various methods. Many people tend to do it the way their teacher did it. You choose how you want to do your piece, and just do it. And enjoy it.
