When I foolishly offered to make a garter which was 4" wide (why do I do 
these things) I wasn't sure how long to make it.  I did ask a few lacemaking 
friends and they all said that they would probably stop when they got fed up - 
not 
much help.

So, I cut a piece of fabric the same width, put some elastic through it and 
put it round the girl's leg - this gave us an idea of what sort of length to 
aim for.
