Dear Friends,
Had to tell you about a wonderful old book I've been loaned. A woman
contacted me recently to identify her grandmother's beautiful hand made
lace. I often dread doing this as the lace turns out to be quite ordinary.
However, this time it was indeed unusual.
Her grandmother had been a Mrs. WEBB of Sydney, although born in New
Zealand around the 1870s. Most of her work was filet network!! Finer than
usual and quite extensive. Maria, her granddaughter still has Grandmother's
books and has kindly loaned them to me.
The one I had copied and bound today dates from around 1902 and is an A3
sized publication by DMC of hundreds of the most gorgeous designs which can
be used for filet work, cross stitch, Assisi work or even knitted. So of
course I now have a lifetime's work cut out entering them all into my DMC
cross-stitch programme! Mind you I do love doing that, but there's soooooo
many.
There were also dozens of even larger cloths advertised on the final 6
pages which were smaller photos. It's impossible to see the individual
squares, but I reckon I can still chart them.
I have never seen any of these designs in any other books!!
I'll tell you about the 2nd book on another day, but it's about 1.5 inches
thick, a hard back from 1905.
Love
David in Ballarat
