Dear Barbara -- Usually you would make the fan to fit the sticks, not the other way round. So now, when you find fansticks that you like, you might have to alter your pricking a bit so that it will fit. As to where to find sticks: I have had some gorgeous ones from John Brooker in England. He used ivory (when that was available), tortoise-shell, and all sorts of other materials. He is a wonderful craftsman. It's been quite a few years, though. Perhaps some of our British spiders know what he is doing at present. Also, there is a fan maker who currently advertises in 'Lace.' His name is Malcolm Cox. I haven't seen any of his work, but I hear he is very good. He uses a variety of materials. He can be e-mailed at <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>. A more immediate resource is antique shops, and I have found some beautiful fansticks that way. The black fansticks shown with my fan "Espalier" on the IOLI Bulletin cover last year were found that way, in a little antiques shop in St. Augustine. Christine Springett's excellent little book (came out about 20 years ago, I think) has a 5-word title of which the last 4 words are "...and Mounting Lace Fans." If you google for it, I am sure you will find the 5th word! And finally, there is FANA, the Fan Association of North America, a delightful organization full of fan-mad members who meet, collect fans, go on wonderful trips -- let me know if you want some names. Good luck! What fun, Barbara! -- Aurelia

(1) Do you know where I could obtain nice fan sticks?

(2) Do they make fansticks custom-ordered to fit the size of the lace? I
can't imagine how else one would be sure to get sticks the right size.

(3) Are there reference publications that give instructions on how to mount
the lace onto the fan sticks?
