The horseshoe or ring is *not* right up against the pinned area.  
Making a picot isn't any harder with them than without them.

The easiest way is to put the shoe/ring or cover cloths down before 
hanging on the threads.  Otherwise, you push the shoe or cloth up under 
the bobbins, gradually.
