Hello Suzy
that sounds like an acurate round-about length guage !!!! thank you.
i'm looking to buy size 60/3, so i'm willing to guess that is it
somewhere near 1265 yards!!!! i really appreciate you guys' help!
thanks again
A 25 gram spool of Madeira Tanne cotton 50/2 (39 wraps per
centimeter,
according to Brenda's book) is 1265 yards, A 25 gram spool of Madeira
Tanne cotton 30/2 (thicker thread, and fewer - 29 wraps) is 714 yards.
I leave the rest in the hands of more nimble mathematicians <g>
No!!!
Tanne 50/2 and 30/2 are Cotton count sizes - which means 50 or 30 840
yard hanks from one pound. Then divide by 2 because it's a 2 ply
thread.
50/2 = (840 x 50)/2 yards per pound = 21000 yards per 454 gms = 1156
yards per 25gm spool
and
30/2 = (840 x 30)/2 yards per pound = 12600 yards per 454 gms = 694
yards per 25 gm spool
The 60/3 - which you said is Goldschild linen - is 60/3 Nm (metric
size) or 100/3 Nel (English linen count)
Goldschild (sometimes) put both sizes on a spool of thread, but the Nel
size is only approximate.
60/3 Nm = (60 x 1000)/3 meters per Kg = 20000 meters per kg, or 20
meters per gm
but without knowing the weight of the spool (and I don't have one of
that weight myself to look at) I can't calculate the length of thread
on it!
I do have a spool of Goldschild 40/3 Nm - 66/3 Nel which says 300
meters length.
40/3 Nm = (40 x 1000)3 meters per Kg = 12000 meters per Kg = 12 meters
per gm = 300 meters per 25gms.
So the spool holds 25 gms of thread.
If the 60/3 spool also has 25 gms of thread on it it will be 25 x 20
meters = 500 meters long.
Hope the maths hasn't confused you but there are so many different ways
of measuring thread thickness, it's a minefield!
See page 6 in Edition 2 or 3.
