That statement is both haunting and amusing at the same time; my own version would, probably, have been the longer: "I would not want to live in that day"
We all live in whatever circumstances we're tossed into, and make the best of the situation, willy nilly... Not many of us actually refuse to live "in that day" and commit suicide to protest it, thus putting our money where our mouth is. I found Communist Poland bad, I find Bush's US worse, but I do not - yet - have the resolution that Majakowski had...
