Try the red elastic bands that are  around celery we get at the grocery store.
That's what I'm using on mine, since the two that came with the winder
went off on their own (literally - one went 'twang' across the room
when I was setting it up, never to be seen again. the other
disappeared on its own, possibly looking for the other one...)
You might also try wrapping something, string perhaps, around the
wheel to add bulk to the groove.
