shows the two stitches I was taught as blanket stitch and buttonhole stitch for my City & Guilds 233 and 234 Dress (Dressmaking and Pattern Cutting) in the early 1960s. The only place blanket stitch was allowed to be used in a garment for was hand-neatening the edges of fabric in flat seams. Everywhere else it was buttonhole stitch (with the half knot on the edge), including around the eyes of hooks and eyes to sew them on - wouldn't do that now!!!
