I'd forgotten the buttonhole stitches over threads to make the "eye" of
'hook and eye' mentioned by Tamara. What was even worse, was 4 (and it had
to be 4 according to my teacher) threads exactly one and a half inches long
joining the lining and the outer fabric hems of a dress at each side seam,
which were then buttonhole stitched over to make a 'swing tack' which
stopped the lining of a dress riding up inside the outer fabric. Who wears
lined dresses nowadays? Only those who can afford to buy couture clothes I
suspect.
We might have strayed off lacemaking, but it's interesting, if only because
I've realised that I could probably have a go at needlelace.
