Hello,

I hope the following information will be useful. It is based on lecture
notes from one of my university courses.

According to Jones (1950) and Johnson (1991) crochet has been known in
Europe as early as the 16th century. Paludan (1986), however, claims that
it has not been known in Europe until the 19th century. The first crochet
pattern book was published in Europe in 1824 (Paludan 1986). Unfortunately
I can't say anything about crochet in America. It seems though that your
date 1832 is not too early.
