My local suppliers - Lace Inspirations, has a "Comparative Thread Sizes chart (Guide Only)" and they show Egyptian Cotton 50/3 in the same column as Madeira Tanne 50, Zwicky silk 100/3, and Brockens & Fresia linens 80/2.

I don't know about any of the others and it's way too late at night to go hunting for Brenda's book to *check*, but I'd have said that EC 50/3 and Madeira Tanne 50 (which is a two-ply) would have little in common, other than both being cotton. As far as I remember (which, admittedly, isn't very far <g>), Egyptian Cotton and Madeira Tanne are fairly close/exchangeable. Which would mean that 50/3 is a third thicker than a 50/2
