You made me curious about the Australian GST and travellers...

Taxes vary where-ever you go, and it pays to find out :)

Those of us who were just in Oregon to attend the PNWLace conference
did not have to pay sales or service taxes (at least none that I
could see ~) - it was a treat for my driver host, to order a beer
with his meal and simply pay the price on the menu. When buying an
alcoholic beverage with a meal where I live we pay a tax on that, as
well as the GST on the meal.
On our way home through Washington state, I was able to buy a
much-needed piece of luggage - the many goodies from the lace
conference were bulging from my one carryall!
The girl asked me if 'I' was 'taxable' - and I didn't know how to
answer. I responded, Well, I'm from Canada? she then asked 'Alberta?'
- Alberta doesn't charge sales tax either. But I'm from BC. So - I
paid the state sales tax. If I was from Oregon I presume I wouldn't
have paid the sales tax. I wonder if I was from an overseas country if
I would have had to pay (probably not?). I found that interesting. And
I had to show i.d. when I made the purchase. Also interesting.

I bought a piece of lace, part of an infant's ensemble, recently from
an antique shop in Victoria BC. I only paid the one tax, the GST,
because the item was still classified as 'babywear' which is tax
exempted in the province :)
