I think I wonder, along with Tamara. I think the embroidery stitches - even the simple zig zag stitch is a more modern development.
Mum has a Viking (Husqvana) from about the 1950's and it only does a straight stitch. The only way she could do buttonholes was by hand or with a Singer attachment a friend gave to Mum from her old machine in the 1970's. I remember that I had a treadle machine and it only did straight stitch too.
