In my experience half stitch doesn't have "workers". I prefer to use a fine crochet hook, pass the bead on to it, pull through one bobbin thread ( worker or passive, which ever is appropriate for the design) and transfer the bead to the thread loop, then pass the second bobbin through the loop. Sometimes I tie the pair of threads, sometimes I don't need to.
