I make myself special undercloths from two thicknesses of cotton material.
I lay the two pieces, about 15 inches square, together, and cut a deep U shape into one side, about 3 inches wide and 5 inches deep. I then sew the two pieces together around three sides of the square (including the side with the deep U shape cut into it), turn the cloth inside out, press it, tuck in the seam allowance on the open side, and machine stitch across this. This then gets placed on my pillow, exposing the pricking in the U shape. I find it doesn't need to be pinned down. It not only covers the pins holding in the pricking, but the bobbins can then be pushed aside right up to the top of the pillow and still be on the undercloth. I have several of these, with different size U shapes cut into them, for various projects.
