We made those too, when I was a child in Poland; they looked a bit like
the ones on the Rumanian website (thanks, Jean, for posting those) --
we didn't dress them ans,usually, they didn't have any hair, either.
But I remember having a pair attached to the string which held my
mittens together (so that I wouldn't lose them) -- a boy for the left
hand and a girl for the right hand :)
