I haven't read the book (thanks for the reference; I'll try to find it) but I was struck by the title."Pears on a Willow Tree" ("gruszki na wierzbie") is a common phrase used to describe things which aren't real and aren't likely to happen -- dreams and fairy tales. Except that, sometimes, they *do* happen; walking on the Moon is something that would have been considered in the "gruszki na wierzbie" category in 1950...
