Hope it goes well, Lynne - I'm out tomorrow, at the Aston Villa Leisure
Centre in Birmingham (UK) from 10.30-4pm, at a papercraft show - Anne
and I find that we get interest in what we are doing (needle and bobbin
lace respectively) because it is something *very* different to the other
stands.
Then on Monday, 21st May, 10-12, I'll be demonstrating in Tamworth
Library, (where I teach a class on Fridays) for Adult Learners' Week.
This has caused some amusement with my daughter and her friend because I
took some lace books of mine in for the library supervisor to borrow -
("coals to Newcastle"?) - to show the sort of thing that we would see as
being general, good, instruction books, as it had been suggested that
there is a display of lace and books at the same time. This meant that
on Friday she brought into class a box full of books from the Central
Reserve to see if they would be suitable - with the result that I now
have "Lace-making in the Midlands" by CC Channer and ME Roberts out on
loan - this particular book was accessioned into Nottingham library in
1939, having a publication date of 1900, and then moved to Staffordshire
libraries at some point in its life. Should make interesting reading;
the class having had a quick look through the others, want to borrow
some of those after the demonstration - this might then persuade the
powers that be that it may be worth having more than four lace books on
the shelves again.... keep your fingers crossed!
For the bank holiday weekend (Sunday May 27th and Monday 28th) I'll be
at the Draycott Festival of Arts and Gardens - 12-5, demonstrating
alongside a bobbin turner (one that I haven't come across before), and
the programme says that there is to be large scale lacemaking on the
lawn... should be fascinating to watch! Draycott is between Derby and
Nottingham. I'm also teaching a day workshop for beginners at the
Beetroot Tree Gallery in Draycott on June 16th.
Then with our lace day on June 2nd and another papercraft show (the
Warwickshire Exhibition Centre at Leamington) on June 3rd, it will be a
very busy few weeks!
Hopefully, the rain will go away again and we can have some decent
weather for demonstration season and get people interested enough to
seek out local classes - I certainly hope so! (Any teachers in the
Warwick/Leamington area who want me to pass on their details are welcome
to get in touch).
Who else will be out demonstrating in the coming months?
