Hello Hazel,
The first thing to do is to find out what Lace and lace making is called in
each language for the countries you plan to visit as you travel around, and
how to pronounce the necessary words or at least have them written down for
each country. At least then you have a fighting chance of finding a group,
or a museum or something by asking around at each place you stop at.
To give you a start on gathering your Lace vocabulary in other languages the
Spanish for lace is Encaje and Bobbin Lace is Encaje de Bolillos, Encaje is
pronounced like Enkahey the h sound of the letter J is throaty the hey bit
is rather a short sound, the de is very short and means of. The word
Bolillos is pronounced Bolilyos, the Bol part is short with the O sound as
short as it is in Bob, the LL in spanish is like the LL in the English word
Million a sort of LY sound
If you come to North Eastern Spain, the region of Catalunya, and are in
either the Gerona or Barcelona provinces, Costa Brava and Costa Maresme
areas, let me know beforehand and perhaps we can arrange to meet up
somewhere. If you end up calling in along either of these coasts then you
really should try to fit in a visit to Arenys de Mar and the lace museum
there, it will be well worth your time to do so. Arenys de Mar is on the
coast nearer to Barcelona rather than in the more northern part of the
region. I can let you know how to get there so just ask. Make a note of
my e.mail address for future reference if you want to.
If you arrive in a country and want to find the nearest lace group it is
always worth asking at the town hall or at a haberdashers about any classes
for lace making. Hence the need to find out the various languages for lace
and lace making.
When I first came here to live I found the local lace classes by asking at
the town hall about classes. The classes are held in one of the civic
centres here where a room is hired by the teacher.
Hope this is helpful.

<<I would like to ask European listers whether this is a
reasonable request and if so how can I find out
whether the situation here is similar to the UK in
this respect.
Assuming there are a lot more "lurkers" than "posters"
perhaps I should ask for personal replies. But I would
also like to know whether anyone else is in need of
similar information - that was what I was trying to
say in my original post.>>
