Yes, lacemakers are indeed special. But I think it's important to remember
that we come in all shapes and sizes and backgrounds - and genders!!

Today, the college student who mows my yard came inside at my invitation for a
tall glass of ice water, and saw my lace pillow. He asked what I was doing,
and when I told him "making lace", he said, "Tatting!!??" "No,' sez I... and
explained. He was fascinated. And went on to explain that his grandmother had
crocheted lace. I pointed to a picture on an Irish Crochet book that happened
to be nearby, and he sqawked, "Yes!! JUST like THAT!" and went on to say that
she used very fine thread and a fine hook. He admired my .4mm hook (for
sewings!) and told me she had taught him to crochet when he was really young.
He said he picked up a crochet hook not long ago, and it all came back to him
in a flash. I would have loved to have known his grandmother! Her grandson
mows grass all summer to pay his way through college, and during those months,
he he must make a boat-load of money! Very industrious young man, and still
appreciates fine needlework - and knows how to do it!
   If h
e weren't so busy mowing grass all day every day, I'd teach him how to make
bobbin lace! ; )
