I would like to add my support to the comments of Tamara and Catherine. Variety is the "spice of life" and there is really "nothing new under the sun" we are told. Lets have less restrictions and encourage freedom of expression in whatever direction we feel attraction.
As a traditional embroiderer, I have been snubbed by many who consider what I do a waste of time. I have had to develop a thick skin, let me assure you. This is an interesting topic with some good issues to consider. However, we are continually being told 'we MUST not live in the past but look to the future' with regard to lace but I also frequently hear, particularly with regard to Exhibitions/Competitions the likes of the 'John Bull' and 'Seven' that 'there is a distinct lack of traditional lace' and this is the reason why The Lace Guild now have a category for Traditional laces which do not have to conform to the given theme, in an attempt to encourage more traditional lace entries. Fortunately we now have an abundance of lace 'how to' books, so there is no fear of history being repeated with lacemaking techniques almost being lost forever. There is something out there for everyone and we should not allow ourselves to be dictated to or made to feel inadequate because we do not wish to conform to other's ways of interpreting our passions/pastimes/hobbies/relaxation etc. but just do what we each as individuals, enjoy the most.
