in La Dentelle Belge by Pierre Verhaegen, 1911 (which I am happy to have on my shelf...!!)
Verhaegen writes page 80,etc about Flanders lace called Trollekant, quoting baron Liedts (from The Catalogue of the Gruuthuse Museum, page 47) <<"It comes from the Swedish word Trolle=fairy and Kant=lace (also of Swedish origin) and it means edge so that Trollekant can be translated as Dentelle Féerique or fantastic." Maybe the word Trollekant also comes from drol ( in West Flemish: thick thread, after the De Bo dictionary)>> And he continues writing about this this thread, a cordonnet, that underlines this type of lace and the Mechlin lace as well ...you can find this great book on the CDs Tess and the Pofessor have made for us It is very complete and can be read as easily as a novel My personal idea when reading this part of the book is that the reference to the fairies for Flanders, Binche and Mechlin is due to the fine excellent quality of the lace and also to the colour of linen thread used for this type of lace...white...
