When working with a pillow on a stand, I use a music stand to hold instructions and thread diagrams and open books. I can pull it in really close next to me (being of the over-40 sight impaired that most of us are) so my reading glasses are in focus on both the lace and the instructions. If it's just a small piece that I can copy and cut out, I pin that to the top part of the pillow.

If threads are difficult to see over a pricking, I scan the pricking onto the computer and print it with coloured background and/or lines. For instance I was having trouble with silver thread on a black on white pricking so printed it yellow on navy blue. You have to use a program that can print coloured background, as yellow lines woouldn't show if you tried to print on dark blue paper.

A sheet of non-slip matting (can't remember what it's called, but mine came on a roll and I cut off what I wanted) placed between the bottom of a pillow and a smooth surface, eg a table stand, keps the pillow in place.
