The second annual Winter Lace Conference in southern California was on
Presidents' Day weekend and it was just as spectacular as last year. The
classes offered included Milanese with Louise Colgan, Tatting with Georgia
Seitz, Cantu with Betty Manfre, Flanders with Kathy Kaufman, Bucks with Bridget
Cook, Withof with Susie Johnson, and Beds and Cluny with Holly Van Sciver. In
addition to the Banquet and Saturday buffet lunch, as was provided last year,
we also had a delightful Sunday brunch. Bridget was the speaker at the
banquet, and she treated us to a delightful overview of ways to use lace (some
rather innovative and a couple more than risque) and a "tour" of the lace
festival at a town in Slovenia. (I think--I spaced out when she said where it
was--sorry!) Of course, the other big part of any lace gathering
is...SHOPPING! There was lots to spend money on. Maria (Provo Enterprises)
and Holly (Van Sciver Bobbin Lace) were the two general vendors. The other
vendors in
cluded Ribbonwinners (tatting shuttles), Loopy Lacer (tatting threads, books,
and shuttles), Belisle's Antiques (showing sewing tools) and Soap Plantation
(scented soaps and lotions). Lots of new books (oh, so very expensive these
days), lacemaking tools, toys, and gadgets. The banquet ended with the results
of the raffle, which turned into a free-for-all as we all tried to find out
what (if anything) we had won. Those of us who had to go back to work left,
tired but happily laced out. The lucky ones stayed Monday for more
instruction. The extra-lucky ones also had a day of advanced instruction from
either Bridget or Susie, on Friday. Alas, I cannot report on either of those
days.
