Dear Lacemakers, Torchon is a nice lace to demonstrate in public. The beginner lacemaker can see almost immediately if a "mistake" has been made, because of the wider spacing of pins. The thread used is stronger and not as likely to break. Also, people (in my country) who have never seen lace being made can "follow the threads" visually. I keep Torchon lace set up on a pillow for this purpose. Basically, bone bobbins with white thread, but with a few dark bobbins holding colored thread. Keep a hat pin handy as a "pointer" and you can really engage the public in conversation. I rarely make lace any more, and can set up the lace pillow and in a couple hours get back to capable lace demonstrations, when needed. Such an arrangement draws attention of people who cannot relate to a pillow dense with pins and white thread. Make your lace pillow as appealing as possible - with the addition of a beautiful pincushion and small handmade doll pinned on top, perhaps. The purpose of demonstrating for me is to show that it is "not that complicated". If we make it look difficult to first-time viewers, they are likely to glance at the lace pillow and "walk on by". Today, so many people are interested in immediate results, and we need to attract their curiosity before they "walk on by". Jeri Ames Lace and Embroidery Resource Center
