Dear Lace Friends, We have not heard much from Angela Thompson (a long-time member of [EMAIL PROTECTED] (mailto:[email protected]) ) in the last two years, as she has been diligently researching and writing a second book about textiles in another large area of our world. "Textiles of South-East Asia" The Crowood Press _www.crowood.com_ (http://www.crowood.com) Hardcover, 222 pages, priced 25 British pounds, $50 U.S. ISBN 978-1-86126-962-5 This is a companion book to "Textiles of Central and South America", reviewed here in 2006. There is some difficulty finding books of quality - in English - covering the beautiful textiles of South-West China, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Myanmar (Burma), Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia (East Indies), Islands of East Timor and Philippines. Here, you can brush up on the rich colorful history of this complex region. Angela's research extends back thousands of years, from BCE, to the present. She then proceeds to present the complex cloths and clothing of this world, giving an understanding of symbolism, patterns and materials. Sections of this book will be of special interest to weavers, dyers, embroiderers and quilters. There is limited coverage of lace. Contents: Historical Background Symbolism, Pattern & Design Costume: Uncut Cloth Costume: Closed Dress Threads & Fibers, Spinning & Dyeing Weaving & Loom Types Dye Pattern Methods Embroidery & Applique Beadwork & Bead Embroidery Thread & Fiber Crafts Fringes, Tassels, Pompoms & Feathers There is a Glossary, Bibliography, and Index Angela's books serve as an impressive example of how an extensive private textile collection can be interpreted and shared with a broad audience with varied interests. Color photographs of her collections and the many peoples of South-East Asia with whom she has visited are fabulous. Inspiring to any who travel in person or through books.
