Not really. The wire and the thread are two different "beasts", so the skills you acquired making the leaves in one medium do not easily transfer to another medium. Fine versus coarse makes less of a difference, so the advice Robin (I think it was) gave you -- to practice with thick thread -- is better. Unless, of course, you plan to concentrate on making lace in wire; in htat case, practicing leaves i wire makes sense.
