I'm not a purist with my lace. Guiterman 100/3 is 'sewing thread'
sized thread. I freely mix and match it with my other threads that
came from sewing stores. Medeira is usually found in 30 or 50. One
is a tad bigger and one a tad smaller than the 100/3, but if the
color suits you, use it anyway. Most sewing threads are cotton 40.
Madeira don't make Tanne/cotona in size 50 any more.
Egyptian 40/3 or Finca 30 are the nearest cotton threads to Guetermann
100/3 silk.
I go by the colors I want, and use either cotton or silk in any
assortment. 100/3 is silk. Medeira Cotona is cotton. Most sewing
threads are cotton, rayon or polyester. Try to stick to the 100
percent cotton or silk. Natural fibers work best, usually.
100/3 denotes a *size* not a fibre. There are cottons which are 100/3
such as Brok or Presencia Fincrochet.
Yes, try to stick with the same general fibre type, although rayon and
cotton are OK together as they are both cellulose, as is linen. I
wouldn't mix silk and cotton though as silk is a protein fibre, like
wool. A couple of pairs of metallic mixed with another fibre for the
glittery effect is fine if it's what you want, though probably wouldn't
wash and wear as well as cotton or linen.
