Hi Nancy -

I'm assuming you were thinking of the TableMates and not the pool noodles when you wrote this! And, assuming it was the TableMates, I'll respond. A clamp-light *could* be secured to a corner of the table, but with a pillow full of bobbins on top, I would be concerned about whether it might get bumped and knocked over. I generally use a 20" pillow on it when I take it to workshops, and the corners are not covered by the pillow. Rather than attach a heavy light, I have used the relatively new Ott-Light which I secure to the pillow itself with an elastic band. I'm preparing for a week retreat at the moment, and will use the TableMate for my Christina - which is a heavy pillow - and it also pretty much covers the table-top. But I'm also taking a light that has a table-clamp but can also be placed in a floor stand. I'll be using the lamp with the floor stand, since I'm driving and have room for it. The table is secure enough for a heavy pillow, but a heavy light would raise the center of gravity and make is much less stable.

The only criticism that lacemakers have for the TableMates is that they are made of tubular metal and plastic. This means that unless we cover them, they can't be used to demonstrate at venues where authenticity is emphasized. Still, when I recently Googled for TableMates, I noted that they now make them in "woodgrain" finish - in a variety of brown colors (oak, mahogony, walnut...), which might be easier on the eyes than the glaring white - but no more authentic!

Are they sturdy enough for a clamp light/magnifier (somewhat heavy) to hold onto the side without tipping? They look great on their site. I've never heard of them before.

Subject: [lace] Big pool noodle

Hi All, I was at Sears yesterday and in their selection of Pool Noodles was one that is 26" (71 cm I think) long and 5.5" (14 cm) wide. I got one to use as a needle lace pillow but I think they would make great makeshift bobbin lace pillows too. I'm not sure how long they will hold up to pins but my skinny one has worked great for NL and minimal pins.

They are in lime green, purple and orange. I couldn't find it on the Sears website but you can go to www.planetfoam.com and look at the 2008 catalogue and you will find the Dipper. Mine cost $6.00 USD. It also has a 1-1/4"
(3-1/4 cm) hole down the middle.

Good hunting and lacing!
