I always prefer to hand sew because I believe that the value of handmade
items is next to none....but when I was in Camarinas for their annual fair
last March, I noticed that the Spanish dealers (for want of a better word)
use a sewing machine. Apparently it is not an ordinary machine but sews a
special stitch. My sister, who is married to a Sicilian, says that there is
a lady who lives in Trapani who accepts commissions to sew lace on to fabric
with her machine and the finish is beautiful....so I suppose one should do
what he should to achieve the neatest results. I definitely would not want
to attach my lace to fabric with an ordinary zig-zag stitch as the
commercial shops in Gozo do though because I think the effect is horrible.

Subject: Re: [lace] Hand or Machine Sew

I usually hand sew hand made lace to fabric, but I would much rather
see well mounted lace which is machine stitched to the fabric than
badly hand stitched. Do whichever you can achieve the best results
with.
