Probably the most useful book you can buy is Brenda Paternoster's book
"Threads for Lace". It list (almost) every thread that is available and some
that are no longer made. She lists how many wraps there are to named threads
and then, in the second part of the book, lists all the threads with the same
wrap. So if you look up how many wraps the thread is that the pattern
recommends, you can then look up a list all other threads of the same size
that you could use instead. You can buy it direct from her (address on her we
site: http://paternoster.orpheusweb.co.uk/threads/threads.html ) As she comes
across new threads, she adds them to her web site as an addendum.

There's lots more on her site, including a page on thread sizes:

http://paternoster.orpheusweb.co.uk/lace/threadsize/threadsize.html

Brenda can explain more fully, but the /2 and the /3 do make a difference.
Oversimplifying it, the /2 means that two threads have been twisted together
and /3 means that three threads have been twisted together.
