Hi Tamara, and Arachne. Tamara can send this on since I am
unsubscribed at the moment.
My lace tour began the day I landed in Amsterdam and took the train to
Brussels. I stopped over in Antwerp for 2 hours to see the St
Carrolus Brorromeus Church lace. This was the only Wednesday I would
be near, so jet lag or not, I went....hauling my luggage. It was a
small collection but very nicely done. One lady who spoke some
English explained every piece to me. Then I went around a second time
and took more looks. Bought a set of their postcards.
Next was Brussels and the Lace and Costume museum. Spent a couple
hours looking at it all.
Brugge was a day trip from Brussels. Kant Centrum was a challenge to
find but got there. The museum hqd some interesting pieces but they
were not identified very well. None of the ladies in the workroom
could speak English so I was ignored. I looked at everything then
left.
From Brussels I went to Chartres. No lace but the cathedral is
magnificent.
Next stop was Alencon. Not only did that museum have their normal
display but they had a special exhibit on the ground floor of Alencon
and Argentan laces that were out of this world. It was worth the
train strike frustration to see it.
I'm now in Bayeux having a glorious time with embroidery. Not only
the expected Bayeux Tapestry but a special exhibit of the longest
embroidery in the world, made in Friesland, Netherlands in 2000. Also
visited the Dentelle shop, and the Dentelle Embroidery twice a week
workshop where people can take lessons in bobbin lace, Bayeux
embroidery or Hardanger. Barely room for 12 people if they are
friendly.
I'm off tomorrow for Paris and Germany. Don't expect to see much lace
for the next week.
