Congratulations on the great grandma thing!! 
How wonderful to do it wedding hanky ..... baby bonnet.
I've done it the other way.... baby bonnet.... wedding hanky. 
But think how brilliant you'll look when you take the wedding hanky and 
stitch a couple of little stitches and make that baby bonnet!
I've done the same pattern (or probably....) that Tamara did (hi T!).
But I would think that any pattern that you like in the 1" wide area
would
work. Wider than that might be a bit over whelming for a baby.
I say pick what you like. There are lots of beautiful patterns out there 
to choose from. And choose a lace style that you're comfortable with
so that it is a mission of love.
