Good grief! And here I thought *I* was a pedant! If that group is *that* "constipated" about pronounciation of "Arachne", they're gonna be much worse about lace "rules". Run. You'll be *much better off* teaching yourself, from books and, eventually, going to a workshop or two, with a teacher who's more savvy about what's important and what isn't.

I assume the two "a" are pronounced the same as those in the word "arachnid" (which is provided via online dictionary to substantiate my pronunciation)...

Can someone please clarify for me?

Bleh. Everyone pronounces it slightly differently, depending on how (and where) they learnt. I learnt the word as a child in Poland, while reading Greek mythology. So, for me, both "a"s are the same -- approximately like your "a" in "bad". And the "ch", in that particular word, will never be a "k" sound (as in "school"), but something in between "k" and "h" (as in "horn"). And anyone who challenged me on that, would be asked "what makes you think it's an *English* name?"

Better off to find some good books on various lace techniques perhaps?

Much, much, better.

Yours, still shaking her head in amazement,
