I really have mixed feelings about using "valuable" old bobbins.
There are some that are so valuable, so rare, so beautiful that it would
[IMHO] be a sin to use them. But I get great pleasure from using tools that
were once owned and used by my father, as I scrape away I think, "my Dad
used this plane", and that is nice.
We look after our family photographs by putting them in acid free albums and
only having prints on show where the UV light might fade them. We say they
are for our children/grandchildren; we suspect that they are not interested
in our old things that give us pleasure. Probably we too were disinterested
at their age and now we wish we had "ask our parents this and that", "kept
this and that which we threw out" , "spend hours doing our family tree", etc
etc..
I have come to the conclusion that my grandchildren are my inheritance; I
"hope" they will be interested in the bits of history I will leave behind so
I will look after these few precious things.
When I am gone, they can do what they like with them, but meantime I will
enjoy "collecting" and my "collection".

Don't store them - use them!

As I said "I know what some of you will say - that bobbins are to be
used - and I would
agree to a point. I have a very large collection of valuable old bobbins
many of which I do use but there are others too precious (or delicate) to
work."
Tell me how I justify using a Haskins bone gingle bobbin which is a
hundred and fifty years old!! We store our old lace with great care but
expect to use the old tools inspite of their age without a thought.
Diana seeking constructive advice!
