Hello Sister Claire
2S/3Z describes the cordonnet/crochet threads which are plied twice.
First it's spun as 2S and then three of those threads are spun together
in the opposite Z direction to make a 2S/3Z thread.
These 2S/3Z threads are good for tatting and crochet, and can be used
for bobbin lace but the double plying makes the thread very round and
firm. It doesn't squash together as the single plied threads will and
therefore makes a crisp but hard lace.
Three ply threads have a bit more 'body' than two ply ones. 2 ply is
good for soft laces which will be gathered, ie point ground or fine
torchon. Three ply makes a crisper lace.
Some lacemakers find that they prefer S twisted thread, others have no
preference. If you are going to have a problem with Z twist it's
likely to be because you are working a lot of half stitch See my info
about curly lace:

Threads made for machine sewing are nearly always Z spun to suit the
way sewing machines work. Embroidery threads are usually S spun as is
anything specifically made for bobbin lacemaking.
The nearest I can suggest to cotton 3S-32 w/cm is either Coats Idrija
thread (Cipke Mojka Suanac za Klekljanje Idrija) No 40 which is a bit
thicker at 3S-28 w/cm or Presencia Finca, either size 40 which is
slightly thicker at 29 w/cm or size 50 which is slightly finer at 34
w/cm, but those sizes of Finca are 3Z.
The other thread you could try using is bog-standard Sylko 50.
Currently branded (I think!) as Amann Coats Sylko. That measures 3Z-32
w/cm.
Hope that answers your questions.

I sent this a couple of days ago, but I guess it got lost. Can anyone
advise
me?
To clarify, I understand what 2S and 3Z mean, but I don't understand:
1) Why one thread is listed as both; and
2) What the difference will be to the process and the finished product
between 3S and 2S/3Z.
Since the thread I usually use (filato per tombolo di Cantu') is
getting
harder to find, I'm investigating alternatives. Filato per tombolo di
Cantu'
40 is listed as 3S and 32 wraps. DMC Cordonnet 100 (which I have on
hand
from my tatting days) is also 32 wraps, but it is listed as 2S/3Z.
I'm confused and I don't understand what (if any) the difference will
make
to my work. Can someone explain, please?
