Hi Vickie, Just so all you Gentle Spiders know, Vickie is an excellent lacemaker and I haven't a clue why she hasn't answered her own question :)
However, It will be interesting to read the replies to your question, which is a very good one. First, I wouldn't put fray check on bobbin lace. Personally, I have used it on tatting when it was a quick butterfly to be used for adornment on a greeting card or the like not so time consuming as bobbin lace. That's just my take on it. As for joining, thread ends can be cut quite long enough to thread a needle and work them into the lace for a few stitches if you want to join edge to edge. My preference when joining is known as "lassen." Work at least one pattern past the "joining. Using a finer thread, sew the two patching pieces together matching pin holes to pin holes. There is an overlap of a pattern, but it does not show if done carefully. Clay Blackwell gives a workshop on "lassen" at Lace at Sweet Briar." I learned to do it in England but didn't have a name for it. I hope we can get together next Monday - I'm free if you are. We didn't go to Georgia due to the flooding. Had the RV almost ready then got an e-mail from Marty with "you'd better stay home." We were in a flood in Atlanta in 1994 and don't want a repeat of that! When "throwing out" bobbins do you tie them together before taking out or just lay them back over the work? How do you secure bobbins taken out after a ground stitch pin rather than a cloth stitch area? If you knot the pairs how do you manage to trim the threads off close enough to the knot to be tidy but still secure? I don't like the look of the thread ends near the knot even after "fray check" has been applied and have unhappily cut the knot accidentally when trying to trim closer. Thanks for your help and please know how much we all appreciate, learn from, and enjoy the conversations here!
