For those out of the UK, we now have a higher priced, large letter stamp, for these big envelopes. So long as you aren't sending just one or two sheets of paper, it can work out cheaper as they no longer weigh them, but instead have a slit through which the envelope needs to pass.
They do weigh them, Jacqui - a large stamp only covers up to 100g within the large letter size limits! There are other price bands for weights above that. These size bands, however, only apply to internal postage, not international.
Postal rates from other countries need to be taken into account if you are sending anything for, say, exhibition, and enclosing the return postage in postal vouchers (I've forgotten the name for them!) - I remember when I sent a piece of lace for Jana to display in her exhibition when she got married, the calculation as to how many vouchers she needed to return the piece, based on how much it would cost her to post, was quite complicated! A single voucher is valid for exchange for a stamp at the lowest price band - so you need to know the weight of the package, and what the international postal price bands are from the country you are sending to - which isn't the same as the one you are sending from!
If anyone will be sending lace for The Lace Guild's competition next year (to be in for June), it may be worth noting that our postal charges normally go up in April.
