I asked my friend who told me that her grandmother made lace. I asked her if
she did it for work or pleasure and here is her reply.

<My grandmother lived in a tiny village of Southill, in Bedfordshire. Her
husband was killed in WWI, aged 22, and she was left with 2 little ones, so she
moved from London to the village and later married a local man. She made lace
for pleasure. Very talented lady. I have 2 hankies edged in Bedfordshire
lace, but I have nothing of hers. She started me writing to people around the
world by paying for me to join Enid Blyton's Club (I still write to a few of
them after 60 years). She always gave me diaries. I really loved her and
learned so much, except how to make lace! I knit and write. I started writing
to my grandaughter when she was 6 months old, and this week started Book #4. I
remember seeing other ladies making lace in Southill too - there were only 3
streets so they had to find something to do!
Thank you for your interest - I rambled on but I love village life and get very
emotional about my memories! Take care,
Pat>
