Could the reason
why the earlier writers described the needlework as being curious be because
they hadn't come across lace before and it was as near a description as they
could make, especially to needlelace?

Do we have any experts on the old use of the word 'curious'. I seem to
remember that it had a slightly different meaning in the past, it had more a
flavour of describing the object as being intricate, cleverly worked, needing
knowledge and skill to make it than describing it as being an oddity.
